HC Deb 23 October 1941 vol 374 c1887
21. Mr. Viant

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that in a secondary school, of which he has been informed, there are no air-raid shelters for scholars or inhabitants, whilst at the school there is a shelter, built for the Office of Works at a cost of £4,000, which has been permitted, for the lack of a pump, to become unusable; and will he have inquiries made, with a view to restoring its use or alternative accommodation being provided?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am informed that the local education authority concerned has provided protected accommodation for the scholars inside the school. As regards residents, there is communal shelter adjoining the school which is adequate for all those eligible for free shelter in the immediate locality. The trench shelter was built by the Ministry of Works and Buildings as an emergency measure on the outbreak of war, and i am in communication with my Noble Friend the Minister of Works and Buildings in regard to its future use.
