HC Deb 23 October 1941 vol 374 c1905
54. Mr. Mander

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he will give an assurance that, in the event of carcase meat being curtailed, butchers will be permitted to take part in the handling of tinned meat to take its place?

Major Llayd George

I am unable to give my hon. Friend the assurance he desires, but, in the event of carcase meat not being available at any time to fill the meat ration, it is my Noble Friend's intention to distribute canned corned beef, mutton and pork to butchers, as at present, to take its place.

Mr. Mander

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there is considerable anxiety among small traders and butchers, and will he give an assurance that their interests will be watched and safeguarded by his Department?

Major Lloyd George

If the hon. Gentleman will have another look at my answer, he will see that the point he has raised has been met.

Mr. Evelyn Walkden

Will canned pork and canned meat be sold by grocers or butchers?

Major Lloyd George

Again, I must refer the hon. Gentleman to my answer, which states that it is the intention of my Noble Friend to distribute canned corn beef, mutton and pork to butchers as at present.
