HC Deb 27 November 1941 vol 376 c878
40. Mr. Ammon

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he proposes to take any action as a result of the recent Debate in the India Legislative Assembly on the proposed release of political prisoners?

43. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Secretary of State for India why the Government of India refused to accept the Motion moved by Mr. N. M. Joshi respecting the release of political prisoners; and whether he has any further statement to make respecting the possibility of these prisoners being released?

Mr. Amery

I have not yet received an official report of the proceedings in the Legislative Assembly on Mr. Joshi's Motion, but I understand that the Motion was withdrawn after the Home Member had informed the Assembly that the question of the release of political prisoners required further careful consideration in view of the close concern of Provincial Governments in the matter and the fact that conditions varied so greatly in the several Provinces. That consideration, he added, would be given without unnecessary delay and in a sympathetic spirit. I have nothing to add to the Home Member's statement.

Mr. Ammon

May I take it then that the door has not been slammed?

Mr. Amery

That is at the discretion of the Government of India.

Mr. Sorensen

Is the right hon. Gentleman likely to receive information in the near future regarding the many rumours and statements that have appeared in the Press respecting the possibility of an amnesty for political prisoners in India, and has he himself communicated with the Government of India regarding that matter?

Mr. Amery

I have nothing to add to the answer I have already given.
