HC Deb 27 November 1941 vol 376 c877
38. Mr. G. Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for India how many newspapers published in India are refused export permits; and the reasons for this refusal?

The Secretary of State for India (Mr. Amery)

My latest information is that in June last the list of newspapers the export of which from India to neutral countries was prohibited numbered 188. I am not aware of the reasons for the prohibition, which must have varied in individual cases, but were doubtless largely connected with the prosecution of the war.

Mr. Macdonald

Is my right hon. Friend aware that such prohibition is having a very depressing effect in India, and will he make further inquiry why so many newspapers have been suppressed?
