HC Deb 25 November 1941 vol 376 c593
32. Captain Strickland

asked the Secretary for Mines what is being done by his Department to encourage the production and use of peat as a fuel and as a potential source of petrol supply; and what is being done to utilise the vast supplies of that commodity on Dartmoor?

Mr. Grenfell

The Committee on Low Temperature Carbonisation under the chairmanship of Lord Henley, which considered the general question of the utilisation of peat, last year reported against any large scale development during the war. I have recently asked them to reconsider this matter in the light of the present coal situation.

Captain Strickland

Do I understand that the Government are considering the possibility of the use of peat as fuel?

Mr. Grenfell

I am asking the Committee to consider the matter.
