HC Deb 15 May 1941 vol 371 c1246
26. Mr. Mander

asked the Home Secretary whether he will consider the advisability of permitting Allied subjects to have the use of bicycles, in view of the fact that many of them have cross-country journeys to work and have to pay a substantial amount on fares at the present time?

Mr. H. Morrison

I have no doubt that chief officers of police will be prepared to grant exemptions from Article 2 of the Aliens (Movement Restriction) Order, 1940, by means of an appropriate endorsement in an alien's certificate of registration to any alien of Allied nationality who can show good ground for needing a bicycle.

Mr. Mander

Will the police have full authority to do that in any case where they think fit?

Mr. Morrison

Yes, Sir.

Miss Eleanor Rathbone

Cannot permission be extended to aliens of enemy extraction who are now employed in munition factories and similar important work?

Mr. Morrison

That must depend on the circumstances of the case.
