HC Deb 06 May 1941 vol 371 c695
46. Mr. David Adams

asked the Prime Minister whether he is satisfied that all Ministries of the Government have been fully combed for suitable men for the righting services who could be replaced by women or other labour?

Mr. Attlee

A Committee has been set up under the chairmanship of LordKennet to consider what further withdrawals of men of military age to the Defence Services should be made either from National Government or from such related branches of administration as may be referred to them and to advise how, by the substitution of older men or of women or otherwise, such withdrawals can be effected so as to cause as little interference as possible to essential services.

Mr. Adams

Is the Minister aware that there is a considerable body of informed opinion which believes that a large number of suitable young men are sheltering themselves in their respective Ministries?
