HC Deb 12 June 1941 vol 372 c330
30. Sir T. Moore

asked the Home Secretary whether he can make, after inquiry from the Metropolitan Police, any statement showing the extent of contributory negligence shown by drivers of lorries with consignments of goods which have been stolen in the streets in the last few weeks?

Mr. H. Morrison

During May there were 14 cases in the Metropolitan Police district of thefts of lorries containing goods in which there appears to have been some contributory negligence on the part of the person in charge of the lorry.

Sir T. Moore

Is my right hon. Friend not somewhat disturbed by the. frequency of these thefts, and has he no ideas for preventing them?

Mr. Morrison

The police do all they can. The remedy, of course, would be for a lorry to carry an additional person to watch the lorry while the other man was delivering goods, but the question of man-power has to be considered, and I do not think that that course would be a wise one.

Sir T. Moore

What about a hefty woman?

Mr. Morrison

Hefty women are wanted in the war effort.
