HC Deb 12 June 1941 vol 372 c324
44. Sir J. Mellor

asked the Home Secretary whether and to what extent Auxiliary Fire Service personnel will be permitted to enlist in the military Forces?

Mr. H. Morrison

Only in exceptional cases will a whole-time auxiliary fireman be permitted to leave the Fire Service. Part-time auxiliary firemen, whose calling up for service with the Armed Forces has been deferred owing to the requirements of the local emergency fire precautions arrangements and who are of the requisite medical standard, will be called up for whole-time fire-fighting duty under the National Service Act, 1941. Others serving in a part-time capacity will be permitted on registration or on medical examination to indicate their preference for service in any of the Armed Forces, although such men are encouraged to enrol for whole-time fire-fighting duty.
