HC Deb 10 June 1941 vol 372 cc25-6
43. Mr. R. C. Morrison

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is now able to make a statement upon the new scheme for securing more equitable distribution of eggs?

Major Lloyd George

My noble Friend has decided to take control of home-produced eggs and arrange for their distribution through normal trade channels at an early date. Consumers have already been asked to register with retailers. The scheme has been approved in principle by representatives both of producers and of the distributive trade, and detailed plans are now being completed. I will circulate in the Official Report full particulars.

Sir J. Mellon

Will my hon. and gallant Friend consider allowing a higher controlled price in towns, to allow for transport and packing costs, in order to induce farmers to send eggs from the country to the town?

Major Lloyd George

Perhaps my hon. and gallant Friend will look at the reply that I have given.

Mr. McKinlay

Does this include eggs produced in Northern Ireland? That is the biggest racket of all.

Mr. Benjamin Smith

The hon. and gallant Gentleman said that the producers have been asked to do certain things. Why are they not instructed?

Major Lloyd George

My answer said that they have "approved," not that they have been asked.

Mr. Haslam

Is my hon. and gallant Friend taking care of the interests of the retailer-producer?
