HC Deb 03 July 1941 vol 372 cc1478-9
25. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the decision to raise to £420, as from the 1st January next, the income limit for compulsory health and pensions insurance, he will take steps to increase the income limit under the Workmen's Compensation Act for non-manual workers?

Mr. H. Morrison

Yes, Sir, the Government have decided to include in the Bill dealing with health and pensions insurance, a provision to amend the definition of "workman" in the Workmen's Compensation Act so as to include non-manual workers whose remuneration does not exceed £420 a year.

Mr. Smith

May we take it that no time will be lost in expediting that?

Mr. Morrison

There are other demands on Parliamentary time, but I can assure my hon. Friend that it is my wish to do it as early as possible.

Sir H. Williams

Will not this step have a consequential effect on the new Clause in the Finance Bill in respect of allowances in regard to travelling?

Mr. Morrison

I cannot say without notice. It would appear to be a question for my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Sir Francis Fremantle

In considering this matter, has my right hon. Friend taken the medical profession, who are vitally concerned, into full consideration?
