HC Deb 23 January 1941 vol 368 cc293-4
38. Mr. Cocks

asked the Home Secretary what progress has been made in the work of employing miners on tunnelling operations for shelter purposes?

Mr. H. Morrison

I am sending to my hon. Friend a copy of a circular sent to local authorities for their guidance. Some proposals under this circular which have been approved will, I have no doubt, involve the employment of mining labour, and a number of others are under examination. The recruitment of additional labour is, of course, a matter for my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour.

Mr. Cocks

Is it still the policy of the Government to carry out such operations for this purpose?

Mr. Morrison

Where suitable, expedient and appropriate.
