HC Deb 19 February 1941 vol 369 cc131-2
6. Mr. Cocks

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can make a statement on the position in the Balkans, and the attitude of Bulgaria and Yugoslavia?

Mr. Butler

The view of His Majesty's Government has for some time been well known to all the Balkan countries concerned, namely, that the best hope they have of maintaining their independence and political integrity lies in mutual understanding and assistance. I cannot at present add anything to the terms of the Prime Minister's recent broadcast.

Mr. Cocks

Have the Government any information regarding the reported offer of the Soviet Government last November to conclude a pact of mutual assistance with Bulgaria?

Mr. Granville

Can the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that; vigorous diplomatic action is being taken by His Majesty's Government to counteract Nazi efforts in the Balkans?

Mr. Butler

In the diplomacy of His Majesty's Government vigour and wisdom are always combined.

Major-General Sir Alfred Knox

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether this Turkish Pact with Bulgaria allows of the Germans passing through Bulgaria to attack Greece?

Mr. Granville

Will the right hon. Gentleman add initiative to our diplomacy?
