HC Deb 11 December 1941 vol 376 cc1672-3
53. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Agriculture the approximate acreage of unharvested root crops and the estimate of food thus entirely lost?

Mr. Hudson

I have no precise statistics, but I have no reason to think that any appreciable loss of food is occurring through root crops remaining unharvested.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the right hon. Gentleman agree that there are instances in the country where root crops have been unharvested, and is he making any report as to the acreage which has not been harvested?

Mr. Hudson

There is still time to harvest roots. The harvest is often regarded as only the corn harvest, but it extends to roots, and they can be lifted up to the end of the year.

Mr. Sorensen

Are not many acres of crops rotting in the ground?

Mr. Hudson

No, Sir.
