HC Deb 11 December 1941 vol 376 c1649
5. Commander Bower

asked the Minister of Labour what steps are being taken to employ in the war effort Russians resident in this country who hold Nansen passports?

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

The requirements for compulsory registration for employment have not so far been applied to Russians resident in this country, whether they hold Nansen or other passports. There are, however, many persons of Russian nationality now in employment here and any others who desire to offer their services should apply at a local office of my Department.

Commander Bower

Is my right hon. Friend aware that there is a considerable number of these Russian who do not appear to be making any effort whatever to help either the country of their adoption or their native country? Cannot he do something more to make effective use of their services?

Mr. Bevin

Certainly, I will go into that matter.

Commander Locker-Lampson

There cannot be as many as 100 of them.
