HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 cc1776-7
27. Wing-Commander James

asked the Secretary of State for War how many commissions it is proposed to grant to aliens in the Pioneer Corps; and whether he is satisfied that British officers and non-commissioned officers will be prepared to serve under these officers?

Captain Margesson

The grant of commissions to aliens in the Pioneer Corps will be limited to the alien companies and it is not intended at present to have more than one alien officer in each company. The answer to the second part of the Question is "Yes, Sir," but I would point out that alien officers will not normally hold a rank higher than subaltern.

Mr. Shinwell

By the term "alien" does the right hon. and gallant Gentleman mean "Allies"?

Captain Margesson

I think the term "alien" is pretty well understood.

Mr. Shinwell

May I have a specific answer? As far as this question is concerned, does the word "alien" refer to Allied nationals?

Captain Margesson

I think, if I am to give a specific definition of what it means, I had better have notice. I do not want to give false information to the House.
