HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 c1764
3. Mr. Creech Jones

asked the Undersecretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether steps are being taken to adjust the present Commission Government of Newfoundland so as to make it representative of the people of that Dominion?

Mr. Shakespeare

The Constitution of the Commission of Government in Newfoundland is governed by the Letters Patent issued in accordance with the provisions of the Newfoundland Act, 1933, and no change in this respect is contemplated at present.

Mr. Creech Jones

In view of the failure to solve any of the essential economic problems of Newfoundland, cannot some consideration be given to the whole question of the personnel and apparatus of government there?

Mr. Shakespeare

I do not think this is the right time for it. It is a matter which can be reviewed only in the light of postwar conditions.
