HC Deb 05 August 1941 vol 373 cc1780-1
35. Mr. Messer

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that there is a number of State-registered male nurses serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps who are not engaged in nursing duties; and if, in view of the shortage of nurses in the Emergency Medical Service, he will arrange for these nurses to be transferred to that service or given nursing duties in military hospitals?

Captain Margesson

So far as I am aware, all State-registered male nurses in the Royal Army Medical Corps are employed on nursing duties, except when they are awaiting despatch overseas. If my hon. Friend has any particular case in mind, I shall be glad to look into it.

Mr. Messer

Is it not true that the National Guild of Nurses has communicated with the right hon. and gallant Gentleman on this point, and if that is not the case, will he take an assurance from me that representations have been received about State-registered nurses who are engaged in ordinary routine duties, scrubbing floors and similar menial tasks? Will he inquire into this matter if I provide him with information?

Captain Margesson

I have said that if the hon. Gentleman would give me information, I would be glad to look into it.
