50. Mr. De la Bèreasked the Minister without Portfolio whether he is now in a 1563 position to make some statement of the progress the Government have made in formulating their reconstruction programme for the post-war period?
§ The Minister without Portfolio (Mr. Arthur Greenwood)I think it would be premature to make any statement at this stage. The formulation of a post-war reconstruction programme is not the work of a moment; many Departments are interested, and there is much preliminary investigation to be done. Preparatory studies are now proceeding under the auspices of the Committee of Ministers, of which I am chairman, and, as they are completed, it will be necessary for the Government to consider the questions of policy involved and to make such announcements as may prove to be necessary.
Mr. De la BèreWill my right hon. Friend cease to explore zones of silence which are the aftermath of many yesterdays, now devoid of life, colour, courage and inspiration; and will he concentrate his energies on the reconstruction programme and the provision of plenty of work, which will give heart to the millions and is the only way to ensure success?
§ Mr. GreenwoodI should like to have that- question translated into language that I can understand.
