§ 38. Mr. Edmund Harveyasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether his attention has been called to the harmful effect on the lives of African women in the compounds of the Northern Rhodesian Copper belt of the absence of 1559 any gardens, on which they might find healthy employment as they do in normal conditions, and the absence of provision for other suitable employment; and whether he will press for the provision of gardens at the compounds and also take steps to secure the services of qualified women welfare workers with knowledge of handicraft training and training in hygiene?
§ Mr. George HallAs the hon. Member was informed on 12th March, further consideration will be given to the question of the provision of gardening facilities when the Governor's views are available. The question of medical and welfare work among African women and children on the Copperbelt is receiving the close attention of the Government of Northern Rhodesia. It is the intention to communicate with the Governor on certain points arising out of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry, and the suggestion that women welfare workers, qualified to give instruction in handicrafts, should be appointed to the Copperbelt will be commended to him for his favourable consideration.
