HC Deb 17 October 1940 vol 365 cc809-10
38. Mr. Brooke

asked the Home Secretary whether he proposes to issue to local authorities precise instructions based on scientific investigation, as to the best manner in which the bunks to be provided should be erected in shelters, so as to minimise inconvenience, discomfort, vibration and noise?

Mr. H. Morrison

My main immediate concern, and that of local authorities, must be to secure that the largest possible number of bunks is placed in each shelter; and I think that, having regard to the variety of shapes and sizes of shelters, it must be left to the good sense of local authorities to harmonise this first objective with those which my hon. Friend has in view.

55. Mr. Brooke (for Mr. Sorensen)

asked the Home Secretary whether he has now instructed London area local authorities respecting desirable standards and types of heating apparatus, sanitation, disinfectants, lighting, ventilation and other amenities in public air-raid shelters; and what progress has been made in seeing these are carried into effect?

Mr. Morrison

Instructions have been issued in regard to sanitation and lighting, and Lord Horder's Committee which has been examining the question of disinfection is, I understand, in sight of a conclusion. The other aspects of the problem to which my hon. Friend refers are receiving my active consideration.
