HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 c706
70. Sir H. Williams

asked the Minister of Labour, the number of persons on the live register on that date in September on which the figures were counted?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Assheton)

At 16th September there were 613,671 persons registered as wholly unemployed at Employment Exchanges in Great Britain. There were also 216,175 persons temporarily stopped or casual workers out of work on the day of the count.

Sir H. Williams

Is there any truth in the suggestion that it is proposed to suspend the publication of the figures of unemployment?

Mr. Assheton

None whatever.
