HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 c707
15. Mr. J. J. Davidson

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Home Security, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he will publish the terms of any special agreement between his Department and the firm of George Wimpey and Sons, Limited, regarding royal ordnance factory work in Scotland?

Mr. Mabane

There is no special agreement between the Ministry of Works and Buildings and the firm of George Wimpey and Company, Limited. The work is being carried out under contracts based on competitive tenders or extensions of such contracts.

Mr. Davidson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this firm has received in Scotland more contracts without tendering than any six firms in the country, and that the impression has, therefore, gained ground in contracting circles that it has some preferential agreement with the Ministry?

Mr. Mabane

There is no foundation for such an impression.

Mr. Davidson

Will the hon. Gentleman's Department investigate the question of this firm receiving so many big contracts without going into competition with other firms who are equally capable of undertaking the work?
