HC Deb 16 October 1940 vol 365 c680
4. Major-General Sir Alfred Knox

asked The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has any information as to whether the oil wells in Rumania were damaged before the arrival of German troops?

Mr. Butler

I am not in a position to make a statement on this subject.

Sir A. Knox

Surely it has been obvious for many weeks how Rumania was going and it should have been our duty to take steps to put these wells out of action?

Mr. Butler

I think the hon. and gallant Member is jumping to a conclusion.

Mr. Mander

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that these wells will be bombed and destroyed at the earliest possible moment?
