HC Deb 09 October 1940 vol 365 cc360-1
29. Mr. Denville

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he is aware that immediately on the alert signal the majority of provision shops turn their customers out and close their doors; that one shop did this so often one day that they failed to open their doors to the public at all; and what action he proposes to take to put an end to this inconvenience to the people?

Mr. Boothby

I am aware that in some areas food retailers were closing their shops a little while ago on the occurrence of the alert warning. I have, however, received no complaints as regards this recently, and I feel sure that food traders generally are now treating the signal as an alert warning and, in the majority of cases, are no longer closing their shops.
