HC Deb 09 October 1940 vol 365 c361
30. Sir Irving Albery

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Food whether he will take steps to increase the keeping of pigs by small householders which is being discouraged by the present Regulations on the ground that, if not a member of a pig club, there is no suitable means for dealing with two pigs after they have been fattened, except by sale in the market, which does not enable the householder to consume part of his pig?

Mr. Boothby

Food Control Committees are empowered to grant licences for the slaughter of pigs fattened for domestic consumption as pork or bacon. In the case of small householders the licences are for the slaughter of one pig in three months or two pigs in six months. My noble Friend is arranging to extend to all small householders who fatten pigs the concession which is at present limited to members of Pig Clubs of selling to a retail butcher one side of pig slaughtered in accordance with such a licence.
