HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 cc1957-8
8. Mr. Wedgwood

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what have been the results of our protest over Tangier?

Mr. Butler

As I informed the House on 13th November, His Majesty's Government have recorded a formal protest in regard to the Spanish action at Tangier and have reserved all their rights under the relevant international instruments. The Spanish Government is therefore fully aware of the attitude of His Majesty's Government in this matter.

Mr. Cocks

Does not the right hon. Gentleman agree that it is not a matter that can be left until after the war, and that in order to prevent the fortification of Tangier we should be prepared to take the strongest steps?

Mr. Butler

I am aware of the importance of the hon. Member's intentions, and I can tell him that His Majesty's Government are watching the matter and doing everything in their power.

Mr. Mander

Are the Italian submarines still there?
