HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 c1958
10. Mr. Martin

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can make any statement on the present situation in Rumania; and, in particular, whether, and how far, the Rumanian Government is now pursuing a policy of neutrality?

Mr. Butler

Within the last few months the Rumanian Government have, on their own admission, invited German troops to enter Rumania. During that period troops have been arriving in ever-increasing numbers. These concentrations of enemy troops in a nominally neutral country oblige His Majesty's Government to regard the Rumanian Government as being no longer in full control of their own country, or its foreign policy.

Mr. Mander

Is the British Minister going to remain in Rumania?

Mr. Butler

His Majesty's Minister is remaining in Rumania in order to protect certain British interests that still remain there.

Mr. Thorne

Is it true to say that Germany has "pinched" all the material that we have supplied to Rumania?

Mr. Butler

I think they have "pinched" as much as they can.

Mr. Wedgwood

Can the right hon. Gentleman say anything about the future?

Mr. Butler

I cannot answer questions about the future. I can only answer questions about the present.

Colonel Arthur Evans

Can my right hon. Friend give any estimate of the number of German troops there?

Mr. Martin

Will they control the oil?
