HC Deb 20 November 1940 vol 365 cc1978-9
43. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been called to the situation at Crewe station; and whether he will take steps to provide there better facilities for the refreshment and comfort of troops passing through?

Mr. Law

it has been decided to provide at Crewe Station a canteen, rest room, sleeping room, cloak room and lavatory with facilities for washing and shower baths and the work is about to begin.

Mr. Hall

Will the Minister see to it that the railways expedite his work, because the conditions are shocking, with men crowding at the counter to get a cup of tea? The winter is coming along, and this work ought to have been done a long time ago.

Mr. Law

The work is being expedited. The reason it has not been possible to begin it before was that it was necessary to reconcile the needs of the troops with the operational requirements of the railway company.

Mr. Bevan

Is the Minister aware that the railway and refreshment facilities at all the main junctions are disgraceful?
