asked the Secretary of State for War whether war establishments permit of a batman for each serving officer?

Mr. Eden

No, Sir. The allotment varies according to the rank of the officer, the type of unit, and other conditions.

Mr. Bellenger

Would it be right to assume that field officers are entitled to a batman each, but that officers below that rank may have to share the services of a batman?

Mr. Eden

There are several scales. Scale A, which is the scale for fighting units, allows one batman per officer.

Mr. McGovern

As it is declared that we are fighting for democracy, would it not be better to abolish the batman system altogether?
