HC Deb 05 November 1940 vol 365 c1182
29. Mr. Martin

asked the Secretary of State for War how many troops are still living under canvas in Great Britain; and what arrangements he hopes to make for their better accommodation during the winter?

Mr. Law

About 45,000 troops are still under canvas. As regards the second part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave to my hon. Friends the Members for Chatham (Captain Plugge) and Colne Valley (Mr. Glenvil Hall) on the 15th October last, of which I am sending him a copy.

Mr. Thorne

Is the Minister aware that, in a number of cases, soldiers are sleeping on the floor without mattresses, and will he look into the matter?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Can the Minister hold out any hope that 45,000 men will soon be in billets, as was promised?

Mr. Law

As I told the hon. Member some time ago, there is an improvement in the position every week.
