HC Deb 19 March 1940 vol 358 cc1783-4
7. Mr. Burke

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will give immediate and sympathetic consideration to the hardship caused to Mrs. Riding and her infant daughter, who, after paying rent, have only 17s. 9d. per week for all necessities owing to a reduction in Army pay from 32s. 6d. to 26s. 6d., because of a breach of Army discipline on the part of her husband?

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Oliver Stanley)

I have inquired into this case and am informed that the reduction was in fact made only for one week. Since then, the weekly payment has been 34s., at which rate it will continue.

Mr. Burke

Do I understand that the practice in the future is not to withhold from the dependants the man's allotment in cases like this?

Mr. Stanley

I gave an answer on that point a week or two ago.

Mr. Burke

Did that cover any extension of time?

Mr. Stanley

No, Sir, up to 28 days.

Mr. George Griffiths

Is the Minister aware that this sort of thing is going on, and have not wives had money stopped because of some breach by the husband?
