HC Deb 18 March 1940 vol 358 c1616
4. Sir N. Stewart Sandeman

asked the Prime Minister what steps have been taken to counteract the Japanese propaganda circulated in North China that Chinese coolies are being secretly recruited in Northern China and taken to France to dig trenches on the Western Front?

Mr. Butler

My Noble Friend's attention has been drawn to the propaganda in question. He is glad to take this opportunity of stating that there is no truth in these reports.

Sir N. Stewart Sandeman

May I again ask what we are going to do about it?

Mr. Butler

Well, Sir, we have already done something about it. The attention of the Japanese authorities in North China has been called to the falsity of these reports.
