§ 75. Brigadier-General Spearsasked the Home Secretary how many Anderson shelters have been delivered but not erected; and whether, in districts where large numbers of shelters are lying rusting where they were delivered, he will either urge the local authorities to have these erected without further delay or have them salvaged in order that this 1360 valuable scrap may be put to some useful purpose?
§ Sir J. AndersonI have no precise and up-to-date figures, but the matter has been the subject of inquiry from time to time, and I am satisfied that, taking the country as a whole, the number of shelters not yet erected represents only a small proportion of the total number distributed. I am aware, however, that the position is not so satisfactory in certain areas, where the local authorities have not exercised their statutory powers to erect the shelters themselves but have left the matter to the householders, and I am arranging for special measures to be taken to remedy the situation in those areas.
§ Brigadier-General SpearsWhat measures is my right hon. Friend taking?
§ Sir J. AndersonI will send my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of the instructions.
