HC Deb 12 March 1940 vol 358 c1010
69. Mr. George Hall

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that a small parcel, made up of two woollen garments, one tin of sweets, half a pound of chocolate, one tablet of soap, with one letter, was sent from Ynysypwl, Glamorgan, to a soldier serving in Bombay, India, and, when the parcel was received, the soldier was called upon to pay 3s. 6d.; and whether he will consider a reduction in these postal charges on parcels for British soldiers?

Captain Waterhouse

The charge to which the hon. Member refers was apparently in respect of Customs duty, and on that point I would refer the hon. Member to the answer on the subject given on 13th February to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Tiverton (Lieut.-Colonel Acland-Troyte) by the Under-Secretary of State for India, of which I am sending him a copy.
