HC Deb 12 March 1940 vol 358 c980
15. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Secretary of State for War whether Members of this House and prospective Parliamentary candidates serving in His Majesty's Forces can address public meetings when in uniform; and, if not, whether officers, ratings and other ranks may take part in public meetings when in civilian clothes?

Mr. Stanley

I am proposing shortly to issue an order on the subject and will make copies available in the Library.

Mr. Hall

Can the right hon. Gentleman give us any indication of what the order will contain? Does he intend to accede to the request?

Mr. Stanley

I prefer not to say anything further at the moment, because I am making certain inquiries in the ordinary way of Parliamentary custom, and I have not yet received all the replies.

Mr. Hall

Will the Minister bear in mind that it is highly desirable that candidates should be allowed to do what Members of Parliament can do, and address meetings in the constituencies for which one day they hope to be Members?

Mr. Stanley

I will bear that in mind.
