HC Deb 12 March 1940 vol 358 cc980-1
18. Mr. Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that the son of a widow, Mrs. Campbell, whose address has been forwarded to him by the hon. Member for Maryhill, has been passed as grade I by his medical board for the 23-year age group; that this man was taken from school and placed under the Mental Act at the age of 10, owing to convulsion fits; that he cannot read or write and suffers from chronic chest trouble, bad eyesight and nasal catarrh; and will he take steps to discharge this man?

Mr. Stanley

Inquiries are being made, and I will communicate with the hon. Member in due course.

Mr. Davidson

If the facts contained in the Question are proved, will the Minister take action to prevent any medical officer or medical board from certifying a man in that condition?

Mr. Stanley

I had better find out first whether the facts are proved.

Mr. McGovern

Will the Minister see that an appeal board is set up, as there is great dissatisfaction with many of these decisions?
