HC Deb 12 March 1940 vol 358 cc989-90
29. Mr. Mathers

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware of the serious depredations amongst poultry caused by foxes; and what action he is taking to stop this menace to important food supplies?

Mr. Colville

I am aware that in some districts damage to poultry is being caused by foxes, though I have no evidence that the position is particularly serious this year. Any specific complaints of damage made to my Department will be taken up in conjunction with the Agricultural Executive Committee concerned.

Mr. Mathers

Cannot the right hon. Gentleman arrange with the hunts concerned to give greater freedom to farmers to destroy these foxes, which cause a very great deal of damage?

Mr. Colville

Power exists under the Defence Regulations for the destruction of foxes, which are classed as vermin In Scotland. Most of the complaints that I have received have been of foxes harrying sheep.

Sir A. Knox

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the damage caused to foxes through the lack of poultry?

Mr. Mathers

Is that the type of mentality with which one has to contend?
