§ 21. Mr. Thorneasked the Home Secretary how many people have been imprisoned under the Defence Regulations; and whether any of them receive prison privileges?
§ Sir J. AndersonThe number of persons detained under Defence Regulation 18B up to last night was 515. Those detained in prison establishments receive, so far as is practicable, having regard to the numbers involved, the privileges accorded to prisoners awaiting trial as modified in certain respects by the instructions published in a White Paper of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy.
§ Mr. ThorneAm I to understand that a number of these men are privileged, that they can have their food and beer or wines sent in? Is that the position?
§ Sir J. AndersonCertain privileges are afforded to these people which, in the main, correspond to the privileges enjoyed by prisoners who are awaiting trial. My hon. Friend will see from the White Paper exactly what the position is.
§ Mr. ThorneThat means that a man who has plenty of money can have all that he wants, while those who have no money will have only the prison diet?
§ Sir J. AndersonThey cannot get all they want.
§ Mr. MaxtonIs the White Paper referred to available in the Vote Office?
§ Sir J. AndersonYes, Sir.
