(for Mr. W. Roberts)asked the Home Secretary whether he proposes to take action under the Emergency Powers (Defence) Act to ensure that local authorities provide such shelter accommodation as he may consider desirable in the area concerned?

Sir J. Anderson

Yes, Sir. It is my intention to use to the full the additional powers now available under Regulation 29A of the Defence Regulations. The most effective method of using these powers is, however, likely to vary according to circumstances, and I am now engaged with my advisers in an urgent examination of the position in particular areas where acceleration in the provision of shelter is most needed.

Are the Government also reconsidering the question of financing additional accommodation when it is required?

I do not think that question has been raised as a source of difficulty in recent times.

But is it not a major source of difficulty with all local authorities?

Sir J. Anderson

I do not think it is at the moment.
