10. Mr. David Adamsasked the Minister of Labour whether, in view of the unemployment in the coalfields, he is establishing training schemes for mine-workers to enable them to aid the national endeavour in other spheres of industry?
§ Mr. BevinMineworkers have not in general been admitted to the Government training centres on the ground that they were required in their present occupation. I am keeping in close touch with my hon. Friend the Secretary of Mines in order that these arrangements may be adjusted, if necessary according to the labour requirements of the mining industry.
Mr. AdamsThe Minister will understand that there is considerable unemployment at present in County Durham. Is he aware that unemployed mineworkers are pressing for this action to be taken?
§ Mr. BevinI had to make an Order prohibiting movement from the mines at the time when the demand for foreign export trade warranted it. There has now been a change, and the responsibility for asking me to withdraw or modify that Order, in view of the arrangement, rests on the 373 Minister of Mines. As soon as he approaches me, I will go immediately into the question of adjustment.
§ Sir Richard AclandIs the Minister aware that miners would appreciate being taught in their spare time how to use explosives in self-defence?
