HC Deb 18 July 1940 vol 363 c381
21. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that upwards of 26,000 persons attended the greyhound race meeting at Harringay on Monday, 8th July last, though the quota allowed by the regulations for this track was originally 8,000; and what limits are now being placed by the police on the numbers admitted at these meetings?

Sir J. Anderson

The number of spectators usually allowed at Harringay is 10,000, but I understand that on this particular occasion the Commissioner of Police gave permission for an increased attendance for a special event. He made it a condition that the meeting should end by 9 p.m. so that those attending could get home in daylight.

Mr. Hall

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the number of 10,000 is frequently exceeded at this stadium, and in view of the risk of bombardment, will he not see that something is done to reduce the numbers at these race meetings?

Sir J. Anderson

I understood that the number of 10,000 was arrived at after careful consideration. If it be the case that the number has been regularly exceeded, I will certainly look into the matter.
