HC Deb 18 July 1940 vol 363 cc379-80
17. Mr. Higgs

asked the Home Secretary whether he is prepared to consider compelling all householders who have gardens to erect air-raid shelters?

Sir J. Anderson

I fully share my hon. Friend's anxiety that every citizen should do what he can to provide protection for himself and his household, either in his garden or in his house, but I doubt whether this is a matter in which compulsion would be practicable.

Mr. Loftus

Would the Minister consider supplying either Anderson shelters or material to erect shelters in thickly populated districts?

Sir J. Anderson

Arrangements have already been made to supply material for the erection of shelters in the case of householders who would have been eligible for the steel shelter but for whom supplies were not available.
