HC Deb 07 August 1940 vol 364 cc182-3
9. Mr. Vernon Bartlett

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he can make a statement on our present relations with Mexico?

Mr. Butler

I hope that the hon. Member will not press me for a statement at the present time. My Noble Friend is fully aware of the interest of hon. Members in the development of our relations with Mexico.

Mr. Thorne

How long will it be before we get a definite answer?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell us that His Majesty's Government do attach importance to an early settlement of outstanding questions?

Mr. Butler

We attach importance to a satisfactory settlement, and if it is early, so much the better.

Mr. Thorne

Are you thinking more of the oil companies?

Mr. Butler

All we are worried about is obtaining a satisfactory and just settlement. We have no other considerations in mind.

Mr. Gallacher

Will the right hon. Gentleman make sure that the oil companies are not encouraging the systematic Fascist propaganda which is going on in Mexico?
