HC Deb 07 August 1940 vol 364 cc189-90
23. Mr. David Adams

asked the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the extensive deposits of aluminium near the Dead Sea; and whether, in view of the urgent demand for this metal, the Government propose to encourage the production of the same in this area?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. George Hall)

I assume that my hon. Friend has in mind certain deposits of aluminium sulphate which exist near the Dead Sea. Such deposits are not normally worked for the production of aluminium, the commercial source of which is bauxite, but if my hon. Friend has information indicating that aluminium can be produced on an economic basis from these deposits I should to glad to have details.

Mr. Adams

Is it not the business of the Ministry and not of a private Member to supply the information required? I am advised that these deposits could profitably be worked for the production of aluminium, and upon the grounds of urgent national requirements and relief of unemployment, should this not be done?

Mr. Hall

I have given the hon. Member the information which the Ministry have. That is contained in the reply.

Mr. Shinwell

Surely the Ministry ought to be able to find out whether there are such deposits there and give a categorical reply?

Mr. Hall

I think it is admitted that there are such deposits there, but they are not suitable for the production of aluminium.
