HC Deb 07 August 1940 vol 364 cc179-80
5. Mr. Glenvil Hall

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the names of the members of the Advisory Committee dealing with aliens, and the number of times it has met?

Mr. Butler

The composition of the Advisory Council on aliens which is attached to the Foreign Office has now been completed. I am glad to say that Lord Lytton has accepted by Noble Friend's invitation to be Chairman; and Sir Herbert Emerson will be Vice-Chairman. I am circulating a list of the members of the Council in the OFFICIAL REPORT. The officers of the Council have already met, and the first meeting of the full body will be held to-morrow.

Mr. Riley

Will that committee make recommendations for the release of internees?

Mr. Butler

I had better refer the hon. Member to the statement made by the Home Secretary on this subject on 23rd July, in which he set out the difference between the duties of the Advisory Committee and those of the Advisory Council. The work of the Advisory Council is chiefly concerned with the welfare of those detained in prison and with similar matters of co-ordination, all of which are very important.

The composition of the Advisory Council is as follows:

The Right Honourable the Earl of Lytton, P.C., K.G., G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., Chairman.

Sir Herbert Emerson, G.C.I.E., K.C.S.I., C.B.E., Vice-Chairman.

The Member for Holland with Boston (Mr. Butcher).

The Member for Dorset, South (Viscount Cranborne).

E. Edwards, Esq.

The Member for Park Division of Sheffield (Mr. Lathan).

The Member for Derby (Mr. Noel-Baker).

The Member for Govan Division of Glasgow (Mr. Neil Maclean).

Major-General Sir Neill Malcolm, K.C.B., D.S.O.

The Member for Combined English Universities (Miss Rathbone).

The Marchioness of Reading.

The Member for Birkenhead, East (Mr. Graham White).

The Member for North Croydon (Mr. Willink).

The Member for Horsham and Worthing (Earl Winterton).

The Member for Aldershot (Viscount Wolmer).
