HC Deb 30 April 1940 vol 360 cc523-4
26. Mr. Gibson

(forMr. David Adams) asked the Minister of Economic Warfare what action his Department is taking with regard to the sending of parcels of food into Germany; how many such parcels have already been intercepted; and what arrangements with neutral countries have been arrived at with a view to stopping the traffic?

Mr. Cross

All parcels of food from overseas which are intercepted and shown to be destined for Germany are seized and placed in Prize. It would not be possible to state the exact number of such parcels which have been seized without an amount of research in my Department which would hardly be justified, but the figures run into many thousands.

The traffic in food parcels from neutral countries contiguous to Germany cannot of course be prevented by the Contraband Control but most of these countries have in their own interest limited the export of foodstuffs to Germany and some of them have specifically limited the traffic in parcels.
