HC Deb 16 April 1940 vol 359 c796
61. Sir T. Moore

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether the farmer is being told what foods are specifically needed or what crops it will pay him best to grow, or whether he is merely being urged to produce more?

The Minister of Agriculture (Colonel Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith)

Specific directions are being given to farmers in regard to the proportion of their grassland which they are required to plough up. As to their cropping programme, it has been the policy of the Government to allow consideration latitude, so that the conditions of the individual farm may be taken into account. In certain directions, however, farmers are being specially urged to expand output, such as, for example, in the case of feeding-stuffs where increased production is required to maintain the output of milk and meat.
