HC Deb 16 April 1940 vol 359 cc787-8
40. Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Secretary for Mines whether he is aware that a number of coal mines have been closed in the anthracite coalfield of South Wales in the past two years and that others are now under notice and threatened with closure; and, in view of the unsatisfied demand for anthracite coal, particularly in the export market, whether he will take steps to give powers to the committee, presided over by Lord Portal, to prevent the closing of these mines and to consider the reopening of those collieries that can be quickly restored to production?

Mr. Lloyd

Yes, Sir. The reopening of pits is one of many possible means of increasing output. It is the duty of the Coal Production Council to review the problem, to assess the relative value of the various steps which might be taken and to advise the Government.

Mr. Griffiths

If this council or committee think it is in the public interest to reopen the pits, will the Government take powers to reopen them?

Mr. Lloyd

That matter will arise when we get a recommendation of that kind from the council. It is rather hypothetical.

Mr. Griffiths

When the council make their report will it be published?

Mr. Lloyd

It will not be a matter of one report, but a continual consultation with the council.
