§ 2. Mr. Ellis Smithasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will see that certain urgent reforms are introduced in workmen's compensation and that the maximum amount pay able is increased as soon as possible?
§ The Secretary of State for the Home Department (Sir John Anderson)I agree with the view expressed by my predecessor in office, that it would not be right to attempt to legislate on the major issues, before the Royal Commission have completed their review of the problem, and I am in communication with the chairman of the Royal Commission on the question of their pursuing their inquiries, notwithstanding present difficulties.
§ Mr. George GriffithsIs not the Home Secretary aware of the report that was given in regard to nystagmus, silicosis 746 and other diseases, by a Select Committee which was set up by the present Lord Privy Seal, who said that they were prepared to do something? Is he also aware that some people have been suffering for 10 years with nystagmus; and is it intended to do anything in those cases?
§ Sir J. AndersonI do not think the position in that respect has changed since my right hon. Friend made a statement some time ago.
§ Mr. GriffithsNo, it has not changed, and we want it changed.
§ Mr. CassellsIs the right hon. Gentleman of the opinion that the Royal Commission on this very important problem should still function?
§ Sir J. AndersonI have just indicated my opinion on that point.
